U.N. calls for urgent efforts to tackle 'ocean emergency'

CGTN报道 The United Nations is calling for greater efforts to protect oceans.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared a global "ocean emergency" at the ongoing U.N. Ocean Conference in Portugal.

He warns of rising sea levels, ocean heating, acidification and plastic pollution.

The U.N. chief urges more green infrastructure and transport as well as higher investments in sustainable fishing.

Over 3.5 billion people rely on oceans as a source of food, while 120 million work directly in fisheries and aquaculture.
