[SHINE]Student's innovative ideas displayed[图]

About 90 innovative designs by students of University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute were exhibited at Jiao Tong University on Wednesday.   

These include graduates' graduation projects sponsored by well-known companies such as Bosch, Panasonic, Roboterra, UAES and Intel, as well as acknowledgement of the achievements of freshmen in an engineering course that encourages students to solve problems in real life with taught knowledge and creativity.   

Following are just some of the projects.   

Intelligent automobile self-parking system   

The design uses a Raspberry Pi to collect RGB image and depth data from the camera. Based on detected parking lines and obstacles, it can calculate the parking path and output commands to simulate human driving operations on a remote controller, directing the car by using the parking algorithm.

Photographic airship based on gesture control   

The design targets sports reporters, military personnel and safari tourists who need a more convenient and intuitive way to control a camera airship. Instead of having to spend too much time learning how to fly, the product enables users wearing the gesture recognition glove to control the airship with intuitive gestures, even from a relatively far distance.  

"Tornado" ping pong collector   

After training sessions of most ball games, scattered balls on the ground is a big annoyance. People who love playing ball games are always bothered with the process of collecting balls afterwards. This design uses a camera to help the robot recognize the balls by color, then an air pump will suck the table tennis balls into the collection box when the robot approaches.  

Remote controlled window cleaning machine   

Cleaning windows is a big problem when it comes to a lot of modern architecture as it's time consuming and sometimes dangerous, especially in high-rises. This design allows users to direct the motion of the machine from a distance to clean both sides of a window at the same time.
